Shingles Contagious Precautions
Shingles contagious precautions should be implemented if a person develops the condition. Shingles, which is often referred to as the varicella zoster virus, is developed from the remnants of chicken pox. If a person has been infected with the chicken pox virus before, the virus is never completely eradicated. Instead, it lies in a dormant state within the body.
In many people, the virus will remain in its dormant state forever. However, if a person has been experiencing continued stress, or if their immune system becomes weak due to extended illness, the virus may become active once again. Additionally, older people (especially over age 50) are more likely to develop shingles. The signs of shingles start with a tingling, burning, and itchy sensation along the spine. This will develop into an irritation that resembles a rash, and will later turn into pimple-like bumps that are filled with puss.
Shingles itself is not contagious. In order to contract shingles, a person must have already experienced the chicken pox virus. On the contrary, if a person experiencing shingles comes into contact with a person who has never had chicken pox, or who has never been vaccinated, it is possible that they will contract chicken pox. This, in return, could cause this person to then later develop the condition. If a person is experiencing a shingles outbreak, they should avoid contact with other people. Also, if one must make contact with another person, it is important that they wash their hands thoroughly before and after making contact with the individual and affected area to prevent spreading the virus. Furthermore, once the rash has scabbed over, the virus is no longer contagious.
In order to treat shingles, there are many over the counter lotions and creams that can be applied to the affected area. Additionally, one should never scratch the affected area as it will prolong the irritation, as well as potentially cause scarring and permanent damage. If you are experiencing shingles, please limit contact with other individuals. Furthermore, by taking shingles contagious precautions such as maintaining good hygiene and a healthy diet to build up one’s immunities, this will help combat the condition.
